Ordinary Magic
If we truly understood how magic works, it would cease to be magic. We would simply call it reality.
Once upon a time, electricity would have been considered quite magical. But then we understood the laws that governs electricity, and it ceased to be magical to our perception and common sense.
The natural laws, which we once did not understand, seemed like magic to us. But as understanding grew, the mystery vanished.
The reality we look at all around us, is quite magical. We simply have forgotten that we once considered it a mystery.
And what we call magic today, is similar. It is simply undiscovered laws of the universe, which govern cause and effect in ways we do not yet quite understand.
But when we do come to understand it, it will also cease to be magical to our perception. Unless we remember the mystery.
The question "Does magic exist" becomes, seen through this lens: "Do you believe we have discovered all the laws of the universe, or is there still mysteries to be discovered?"
Not so much superstition and woo-woo, as it is a realistic view of our limited perception of reality. Acknowledging the existence of magic becomes acknowledging that we simply do not know all that is to know.
So I do believe magic exists. That is why I am committed to understanding the unknown and unseen laws. Because once I do understand it, it will be reality to me and abiding by these laws consciously, might allow what would seem like miracles to us today.
Jesus once pointed to this same thing, if one accepts that the Gospel of Thomas (non-canon) is quoting Jesus accurately:
In the Gospel of Thomas, logion 3:
“If those who lead you say to you, ‘See, the kingdom is in the sky,’ then the birds of the sky will precede you.
If they say to you, ‘It is in the sea,’ then the fish will precede you.
Rather, the kingdom is within you and it is outside you.
When you come to know yourselves, then you will be known, and you will realize that you are the sons of the living Father.”
We lack the eyes to see the mystery surrounding us. Our vision is dulled by familiarity. So how does one regain the sense of mystery?
Again Jesus have the answer.
"Become like children again".
See the world with renewed wonder and curiosity. We've forgotten we once found familiar things mysterious. Every child experiences this. The wonder at rain, at light, at their own hand moving.
Can you remember how it felt when the world was new, unknown and magical to you?
